Why Geography?

I’m Shandra Saraswati Pertiwi, one of a student at the Faculty of Geography, Gadjah Mada University in 2015.

Not a few people are asking;

Why did Shandra chose geography? Is that her desire? I remember She wanted to enter math.

Maybe there’s even be thinking;

She’s choose a major that not many people intrested, so She have more opportunities.

Honestly...

Since childhood I loved math very much. Moreover, after I knew the figure of Mrs. Chaerulaeli (My math teacher, when I went to SDIT Nurul Ilmi Cibarusah), She deepened my passion for mathematics, even I'm trusted to follow some math competition and the results that I got could make my  school and of course my family proud of me.

I went to  Junior Highschool that under same foundation, SMPIT Nurul Ilmi Cibarusah. I'm very close to my math teacher that time, Miss Asri. Until now, we still often talk each other. We could make a very close relationship since I started to follow the mathematics competitions to represent my school. When preparing the competition, almost every night I came to her home. I am very happy to have such sweet experiences, and the bonus results I achieved is also very beautiful.

The background that I have, making a lot of people who know me think when I’m attending college I'll choose math, I also think so back then. So, when I declared to choose geography, I seemed to destroy the foundation that I created. In highschool, Geography categorized as social studies, whereas at Gadjah Mada University, geography included in science studies, but there’s not many people know.

Papa also had doubts whether geography is my really choice, my really desire, whether I was aware of the decisions I make? Yes, it is very reasonable that every parent won’t their children choose the wrong way of life.

I'll tell you a little secret ...

When I was  3 years old, I was quicker mastering calculation than my reading skill. And the thing that interest me to read is a children's encyclopedia, Miki Banyak Bertanya: Di mana ujung pelangi itu? Mengapa gunung meletus? Seberapa jauh bulan itu? Yeah, not a fairy tale or lullaby that common girl interest.

I want to know the world, I really love to looking pictures of the appearances of the earth, layers of the earth, the sky, the universe. Since childhood I already knew how the earth was formed, Papa explained the creation of the earth in an interesting way. I loved to see the map of the world, wonders of nature such as the highest mountain, the longest river, the deepest crater. Even since elementary school, I have known phenomenon such as the Bermuda Triangle, the Dead Sea, etc.

When I was in junior high school, Mr. Bakoh Basuki, My georaphy teacher deepened my passion for geography. To me, he was a great successful teacher, he could hypnotize his class to hear what he says. Geography was increasingly become interesting because of it.

In 2013, I entered high school at which time the Indonesian Education System is experiencing a transition from KTSP 2006 to Kurikulum 2013. In the first year, the students had divided into social and science studies, so that students will more focus in deepening their major. I'm absolutely entered the science major. But there is a thing that relief, we could choose one of a subject cross-interest. Geography definitelety be my choice.

At the end of high school, I had hesitated to choose between geography/maths/civil engineering. If I chose civil engineering, of course, Papa will be greatly helped (he working in construction, since I’m 12nd until now, I often help to calculate and analyze his project). But I finally decided to live in his shadow anymore.

"Not everyone can look at a case from different angles. 

Closed-minded people will certainly have strong view about something that they believe.

If something like that bothering our lives, face it... make it clear...

 At least we have tried to fight for what we believe...

Everything that we choose will affect our future, and also the future of others.

Life is a choice. 

Whatever our choice, whoever we are, as long as we live... 

Wherever we are, I'm sure there is a mission that we should live. "
